The Austrian investor and Karstadt-owner René Benko wants to take over the Metro-Kaufhof Warenhaus daughter according to a report of the “Handelsblatt”.
His company Signa Retail which can pool the operative business of the Karstadt stores, have already made an offer, the newspaper reported. Spokesman for Metro in Dusseldorf and Signa Holding in Vienna refused to comment on the report. As the newspaper reported, citing “several people familiar with the matter”, the review of the books had been completed and submitted a written offer. The offer has already been discussed in early May in the Metro Board. The purchase price lies with approximately 2.9 billion euros, it said.
Benko had already commanded the end of 2011 for Kaufhof. Metro CEO Olaf Koch laid the Kaufhof sale but shortly after taking office in early 2012 on ice. “Postponed is not canceled,” Benko Commenting on the decision at that time.
For years, there is speculation in the retail industry through a merger of the two major German department store chains, could be achieved with the extensive cost savings such as by eliminating a control center. Metro is no longer part of the core business Kaufhof. For a possible sale of the parent company had repeatedly called a reasonable price, a sound financing and a long-term strategy.
