Minimum wage leads to drop in mini-jobs – Hamburger Abendblatt

Berlin. The introduction of the minimum wage in Germany has apparently led to a significant decline in MiniJobber. As the Minijob Centre in Bochum announced that the number of mini-jobbers went in the commercial sector in the first quarter of this year by 3.5 percent, or by about 237,000 to around 6.6 million people. Particularly affected is East Germany: Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia recorded in the first three months and the largest decreases of 7.7 and 6.6 percent. Year on year the number of employees decreased slightly in the commercial sector by 2.8 per cent or almost 190,000 to 6.6 million.

In terms of sectors, the largest number of jobs in trade (minus five percent ) and in manufacturing (minus 4.4 percent) disappeared. The number of mini-jobbers in private households on the other hand remained unchanged compared to the year with 284,000, year on year, it rose even by 6.1 percent.

The decline in Mini Jobs confirms the forecasts of economic research institutes who had a prior elimination of minor employees, warned by the minimum wage, especially in eastern Germany. In April, the researchers had “Die Welt” predicted according to the daily newspaper fell by 220,000 this year. In return, however, are likely to arise and 50,000 social insurance bodies.

Clemens Fuest, the president of the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, said the “world”, in rising unemployment figures had to the do not reflect negative trend in mini-jobs. For pensioners and students appeared not in the unemployment statistics. The legal minimum wage of 8.50 euros per hour was introduced at the beginning.
