Berlin (Reuters) – In the impasse between Greece and its creditors Germany warns the Greeks before a game on time.
“A third aid package for Athens is only possible if the reforms are implemented,” said Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel of the “Bild am Sonntag”. The SPD leader and Economy Minister added: “We can not just send money there.” Union parliamentary leader Volker Kauder accused in the “Welt am Sonntag” of noncooperation of clammy State on the southeast flank of the euro zone: “The Greeks have to show that they go on the agreed way.” Before, he did not want to talk about a third rescue package.
Greece is held since 2010 by the euro partners and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) 240 billion euros over water. In the current second aid package but it hooks enormous, and the coffers in Athens empty-threatening. An agreement with the creditors on the key issues is not foreseeable. According to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, the two sides have agreed on budgetary targets and rates of VAT. But in pension and labor market issues he does not want to move away from his positions. Given the muddled situation Tsipras had brought the end of April a referendum on the controversial reforms into play if the donors should insist on cuts. This idea grabbed Gabriel on: “Maybe that can speed up the decisions.” At present, however, it does not look like it. Greece is planning for words of Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis currently neither a referendum nor elections.
The government is threatening to go the money in the next few weeks, if the disbursement of 7.2 billion euros from the current utility fails. A related euro exit of Greece would be politically extremely dangerous according Gabriel. If the first country go, the rest of the world will Europe look different: “No one will have more confidence in Europe if we break up in the first major crisis.”
Given this risk, the EU calls for rapid progress in the debt talks. There is “every reason to hurry,” said the Vice President of the EU Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, the “image” of Saturday. Needed is a credible and comprehensive reform list. Even if it should ultimately come to an agreement, the financing will remain the end of June after the end of the current program in limbo. Because a third package that would subject to similar requirements as the present, the government rejects.
