Fair trade: Customers spend more for fair trade products – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Whether coffee, chocolate or flowers – are already fairly traded products not only on the shelves of the world shops. The vendors promise better living conditions for small farmers, fair wages and the elimination of child labor. And demand is growing: last year, significantly more money was in Germany again spent on Fair Trade products.

For good one billion euros, the customer bought goods fair in 2014. That was 31 percent more than last year, as the Fair Trade Forum announced. Driven growth is mainly through supermarket offerings.

In terms of the total expenditure of the German citizens, put the market researchers in 2014 alone food to 250 billion euros, Fairtrade offers, however, a niche segment remain. “With 13 euros per capita spending on fair trade products depends Germany Switzerland and the United Kingdom still significantly behind,” says the managing director of the industry association, Manuel Blendin.

For the sum of about two pounds Fair Trade coffee are currently available – this is still the most important product category. Even goods such as handicrafts and flowers wear appropriate seal. Not only in terms of sales there is room for improvement, highlighted the Forum.
