With his resignation Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras wants to pave the way for rapid elections on September 20, free. A radical cut. Previously, some had speculated in Athens, Tsipras could implement first the more demanded in return for the third bailout reforms and be elected until later. Now the government has clearly decided against this option.
The advantage is faster elections for Tsipras obvious. In elections this year, the Prime Minister and party leader had the right to draw up the lists of candidates alone without Congress. He could try to remove the radical left-wing opposition within the party from its own ranks, and thus also from the new Parliament. Finally, they had little time to regroup for an election campaign.
The loud leftist and communist opposition in his own party has made governance impossible last Tsipras: In the vote on reform laws on August 14 had voted by 149 deputies out of Tsipras Syriza 32 against and abstained eleven of the voice. The government, which has actually more than 162 of the 300 seats in parliament came only on 118 votes from his own camp. They therefore do not reach the threshold of 120 votes, which are necessary for the continuation of a minority government.
It is unclear what means the announcement of elections for the implementation of the third aid package of up to 86 billion euros, for which the Bundestag had cleared the way until Wednesday. Creditors still on Wednesday the disbursement of the first tranche decided flowed with the 23 billion euros to Athens.

More money is flowing, however, only if Athens has implemented further reforms. After the election in September Tsipras must however hasten to this – as required – to adopt until October in the new parliament. Much is therefore likely to depend on how the majorities after elections look.
The outlook for Tsipras to win the elections, are great. He is popular because he had so long locked in a hard stance against new austerity measures. In a survey conducted in late July had judged him positively than 60 percent.
