The German retailers have posted a hefty boost in sales in January. Low inflation strengthens the purchasing power of consumers, which is also the retailers will benefit. The Federal Statistical Office reported a provisional basis, sales increased after inflation of 2.9 percent for the month.
Economists had forecast a decline, however, to 0.3 percent. For December, the monthly increase of 0.6 percent in real terms was confirmed.
For the year, sales rose in January in real terms by 5.3 percent. This is the highest price-adjusted increase since June 2010 (up 6.0 percent). (DJ)
