Sundar Pichai – The man behind the new Google – Süddeutsche.de

Sundar Pichai is a cute boy with a lot of power: He has been responsible Gmail, Maps and Android. Now he is head of the downsized Google Group.

Jürgen Schmieder , Los Angeles

There’s this scene in the television series Silicon Valley , in which the hypocrisy of the technology industry is wonderfully satirized: The founder of a start-up boasts that he US President Barack Obama had declared at a meeting, such as the running in northern California. “Okay, of course we are making a pile of coal and shake up the media industry” – but the most important thing but that companies the world through elegant programming, ie technology, make it a better place

They talk. all for do-gooders in Silicon Valley, at least they speak very often of them – just as if in a handbook for company founder and CEO talking determined over goodness as a minimum target. Sundar Pichai has obviously not read this manual. At least the new CEO of Google does not belong to the noisy people in California’s tech scene.

As a company founder Larry Page he transferred the line of the online business last October, wrote Silicon Valley Size Om Malik at Twitter what many thought: “It is proof that nice guys can actually win.”

Pichai was 43 years ago in the southern Indian city of Chennai – then Madras – born, with 21 he came as a student in the United States. He once told that his parents had spent all their savings for his plane ticket. After statements of the elite universities Stanford and Wharton Pichai first worked as a product manager at Applied Materials, and as a management consultant at McKinsey, 2004 – shortly before the company’s IPO – he switched to Google

Drive, Gmail, Maps: Pichai working on the core products

If you do not know who this Sundar Pichai is likely to know at least all the items on which he has worked in the past eleven years: On Google’s Chrome browser, the Service Drive and the email provider Gmail, the map service Maps and the mobile operating system Android. In May last year there were rumors that he could be CEO of Microsoft – in the autumn, however, made him Page number two in business operations at Google. Now Pichai is managing a loud Page “somewhat leaner” company under the umbrella of the newly founded company Alphabet. Page writes in the company’s blog: “He shares many things in my mind and has developed strongly since October, the time has come that is Sundar CEO of Google..”

US Internet Group Google builds radically to

Google should get a new corporate structure. The Internet company is part of a holding company called alphabet.

Employees describe Pichai as friendly people, who – unlike many bosses – actually listening and not just wait until he finally could talk himself again. He’ll take care of not only the interests of his own team, but see to it that his team achieved their objectives, without interfering with the other teams at work. . He was a prudent mediator in conflicts – yes, even in Silicon Valley companies human touch sometimes – circumspect and empathic responding, the so solves quarrels that no discord remains

Pichai said in the fall: “What has always fascinated me to Google’s search engine is the fact that it just works for a child somewhere in the hinterland as a professor at Harvard or Stanford – both only need a computer with Internet access I want that we. look at Google and that is what not only develop products for specific areas. ” His goal is to provide over smartphones as many people as possible with information: “. I see a way to someday have five billion users”

Pichai is apparently no one who speaks only of the to improve the world. He wants to actually create – at least for Google
