Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles arrested in Japan – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Mark Karpeles, CEO of the once largest and now insolvent Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, has been arrested in Japan. This was reported by Japanese news agency Kyodo. The 30-year-old Frenchman is therefore suspected to have intervened illegally in 2013 and for his own benefit in the computer system of the company. Karpeles’ lawyer said his client denies any wrongdoing.

The Tokyo-based marketplace has long been the largest trading platform for digital crypto currency Bitcoin. End of February 2014 reported on Mt. Gox insolvency and plunged the currency in a crisis of confidence.

Bitcoins there since 2009. They are produced in complex computing processes on the users’ computers, but can also be purchased on the Internet with established currencies such as dollars or euros. They are mainly used for payments on the Internet to use.
