Quarterly figures: Apple originally sold fewer iPhones – ZEIT ONLINE

Since 2007 Apple introduced the iPhone, it sold more and more smart phones. This trend will end in the second quarter. During this period, Apple sold 51.2 million iPhones by its own account. That’s ten million less than a year ago. The revenues of the company decreased to 50.6 billion dollars 13 percent less than last year.

Apple predicts that sales will decline in the coming quarter – at 41 billion dollars. The share of the technology group lost about five percent immediately after the figures were announced.

This was already expected, but had analysts with a higher value expected. The forecast for the current quarter fell from under her expectations. The share lost after trading temporarily around seven percent. She stood in the past few months already under pressure.

The distributions to investors will now be increased by a further 50 billion dollars. Thus they add up to 250 billion dollars.

The iPhone launched in 2007 has fueled the growth of Apple and is the group’s single most important product. It brings about two thirds of sales. The group cited as a reason for the decline of the weak economy in many regions – and among others in China. At the same time the smartphone revolution is affecting more and more developing and emerging countries where more favorable devices are first asked. but

Apple dispensed with low-priced models on offer, waiting instead that more people in the emerging markets have enough money to buy an iPhone. This paid off so far in China. The course ensures the high-billion profits, but at the same time expresses its market share. Since March Apple attempted to counteract the iPhone SE – the first slightly cheaper model that contains a smaller format much of the functions of the current top devices.

A year ago, the pent-up demand for the iPhone 6 with its larger display of the Christmas season in 2014 was so great that it spilled over into the first quarter, 2015. The iPhone sales jumped by 40 percent then high to 61.2 million units.

The quite some time shrinking sales of iPad tablets fell by almost a fifth to 10.2 million units. The Macs there was a decrease by twelve percent to four million sold computers. So Apple could not do better than the chronically weak PC market after a long time. The industry sales had dropped, according to market researchers by about a tenth.

The streaming service Apple Music have now passed the milestone of 13 million paying subscription customers, said CEO Tim Cook.
