Greece: Alexis Tsipras sacrifices Janis Varoufakis for one last chance – THE WORLD

13 hours between victory and withdrawal. 13 hours between two surprises that so little can be combined with each other. Greece Finance Minister Janis Varoufakis announced his resignation in the morning after winning referendum.

Relatively quickly after the announcement of the results of the referendum had been made clear to him that some of his European colleagues and their partners would consider to be useful if he would not show up at their meetings, Varoufakis wrote in a blog post entitled: “Minister No More!” “We know from the left, how to act together, without having to worry about the privileges of the Office.”

Varoufakis, of the meetings of the Euro finance ministers had made repeatedly for upset with his vain appearance and the ongoing presentations, justified his resignation with the desire to Premier Alexis Tsipras in their exploration of options for a new tool to help.

The reasons for his resignation reads as if not only other finance ministers or members of the troika of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), European Commission and European Central Bank (ECB) Varoufakis suggested the resignation. To date, the Greek had anyway never bothered about the reaction of his colleagues on his behavior.

underdog from the people

Varoufakis made it clear in his blog entry that his Prime Minister an interest in the withdrawal of a maverick have: Tsipras himself had the” estimated withdrawal idea as helpful “. This has a good reason. If Tsipras actually again will seriously negotiate with the other Europeans about a new aid package, the whereabouts of his finance minister would be a real stumbling block in these discussions

From the beginning Varoufakis had colleagues provoked. He who had taught as a professor among others game theory at the University of Austin in Texas tried, seemingly from all findings of this discipline to federal Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and other European finance ministers. Even that he appeared without a tie and with a hanging out of his pants shirt in the rounds of conservative finance minister, was a deliberate provocation.

Varoufakis as an underdog, the man of the people against the oppressors ties carrying out the rich North. Even now he takes pleasure in this role. “I’m going to the disgust of the financiers proudly wear”, he etched

Exactly this behavior it was that Varoufakis an untrustworthy negotiating partners made in the talks at the end. Again and again he came up with new proposals to the meeting. But these papers often lacked all the details. There were great designs, confusing graphics. But concrete calculations and legislative proposals lacked ever. And quite often, the statements of the Greeks disagreed. Hue hott.

Schäuble’s visit was a disaster

The finance minister urged his colleagues to distraction. The first meeting of the Euro Group, in which he himself took part, he dragged a television crew behind him in the courtroom. Legendary was also the meeting of the group in Riga. Once again Varoufakis bugged the creditor with his lectures.

As usual, he spoke so long that most seethed in their seats with rage. Supposedly they accused him later, he steal their time. But the minister denied there had ever been such a criticism of him. And to prove that, he said in an interview with a US magazine that he had recorded the meeting on his smartphone.

Even his first inaugural visit to Schäuble came to disaster. Varoufakis visited the main counterparts of the euro area not only very late his first visit from.

The atmosphere between the two was tense noticeable how the press conference Connection showed. Schäuble spoke of that one is not in agreement on many points. Following the motto “We agree to disagree” (“We agree that we do not all agree”). And Varoufakis, typical of him, put something extra: “We cant’t even agree to disagree” (“We can not even agree on us not to agree”)

Dragasakis as the new strong man?

What does Varoufakis’ resignation now for Greece and its funders? It looks as though Premier Tsipras actually once again interested in serious negotiations with creditors, otherwise he would have the troublemaker Varoufakis can also be in office. For months, it was known that there was criticism of the former professor also within the moderate camp of Syriza.

He was considered too vain and stubborn, his negotiating style than too little on results. Therefore, he was also largely withdrawn from the talks with Schäuble and the other Europeans. Nevertheless objections and disruptive, he could not resist. The location made it worse.

Should it really come to new negotiations, the leadership of the talks could be even more than before are in Greece Deputy Prime Minister Janis Dragasakis , It almost sounds like an irony of history. Dragasakis, considered the hard Left, is also one of the realists. A man at least with understanding of the give and take of politics, it needs to find compromise.

And Varoufakis? The way he has presented in the past five months, he will continue to report with his positions on Greece to word. And he is here as a former finance more public than before.

The fact that he was the one who almost eleven billion euros that were left out of the bank bailout, has transferred back to Brussels, however, it could still cause trouble. Because in Greece, there are probably some critics who wondered whether it could legally call him to account.
