Bundesbank: Counterfeit emergence in 2015 increased significantly – SPIEGEL ONLINE

In the first half of this year, the Bundesbank has significantly more counterfeits withdrawn from circulation than in the previous six months. A total of around 50,500 false euro notes with a face value of more than 2.2 million euros were registered in Germany, said the Bundesbank. This corresponds to an increase of 31 percent compared to the second half of 2014.

However:. “The emergence of counterfeit money remains in Germany, despite the increase at a low level,” said Bundesbank board Carl-Ludwig Thiele. Theoretically accounted for 10,000 inhabitants only twelve false bills. Nevertheless, it was important to strengthen the fight against counterfeit money in Europe.

The notes on the edge of the spectrum – the five- and the 500-euro bill – were largely ignored by counterfeiters, however. Only one percent of the counterfeit money was accounted for by five-euro notes, 0.5 percent to 500-euro notes.

While the number of counterfeit notes increased, according to Bundesbank declined, the number of counterfeit coins. In total, nearly 14,500 of them put the central bank in the first half of safe – significantly less than in the previous six months: the second half of 2014, the number was still at 26,000. Nearly 80 percent of wrong hard money were two-euro coins, about 15 percent was attributable to one-euro coins and the rest on 50-cent coins.

According to the new five and ten euro notes comes the new 20-euro note in November. It is much more difficult to fake, according to the Bundesbank.

Since the popular counterfeiters 20-euro bills are redesigned, the central bank expects a decline in counterfeit money in total. According to the new 20-euro bill, the higher denomination bills are renewed gradually.
