German workers make with perceptions of the EU Commission in Brussels, on average, more overtime than their counterparts in neighboring European countries. The competent EU Social Affairs Commissioner Laszlo Andor told the newspaper “Die Welt”: “In no country in the euro zone there is a big difference between the collectively agreed weekly working time and the actual weekly working time as in Germany.”

According to EU studies actually agreed weekly working time in Germany lies at 37.7 hours – but actually the employees worked 40.5 hours a week. So it makes almost three overtime per week. Each country has its own peculiarities when working. “It is important at the end that the country is competitive and that the requirements of the EU Working Time Directive are complied with – which is generally the case in Germany,” Andor said.
