The services union Verdi called at four locations in Germany to strike the Amazon employees. The walkout in Leipzig, Bad Hersfeld, digging at Augsburg and in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rheinberg is to start on Monday and initially last until Tuesday evening, as the union announced late on Sunday evening.
“The pressure to perform now takes inhuman traits,” said Verdi strike leader Thomas Gürlebeck. Verdi national board member Stefanie Nutzenberger explained according to a statement: “Amazon still refuses to recognize the legally guaranteed in Germany right of workers to a collective agreement.”

According to the union sue employees in the Amazon fulfillment centers on a high number of fixed-term contracts, extreme pressure to perform and inadequate labor and break rules. In addition, employees would get some many hundred euros less than they would have under the collective agreements in the retail and mail order trade.
Verdi tried for more than a year to move the world’s biggest online retailer with strikes at various locations to collective bargaining under the terms of the retail trade. Amazon refuses, however, and sees himself as a logistician. The company has nine locations nationwide to more than 9000 employees.
