Siemens to supply 175 rail cars for San Francisco – MarketWatch

Siemens scored from San Francisco a major order for rail cars. As the company announced on Friday, the local Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has ordered 175 cars for the urban road network for 648 million dollars. Together with the option for a further 85 cars, this is the largest order that Siemens has ever received for this area from the United States. As the mayor of the city, Edwin Lee, said the car in California are built and so secured jobs in the region.

Siemens says further, with the order will their position as market leader in the United States strengthened for this segment. Every third road or rail cars there came from the Munich group. The cars are built at the Siemens plant in Sacramento, the first to be delivered in late 2016.

Siemens will build a newly developed type, based on the model S200. He will be very energy efficient, partly because of a drive system in lightweight construction and an LED lighting system, the 40 per cent less energy than the standard neon systems.
