Weselsky: agreement by negotiation possible

GDL chief Claus Weselsky sees opportunities for an early agreement on wage dispute with Deutsche Bahn. He was the “firm conviction” that negotiated a result could be achieved, the chairman of the German train drivers union (GDL) said before the next round of talks today. Both sides had shown in December that compromise can be achieved.

mid-December, both sides had moved in the deadlocked pay dispute with each other and retroactively for the second half of 2014 a one-time payment of 510 euros for the GDL members agreed. Strikes were for the time being from the table. On weekends Weselsky however, had again threatened with strikes.

In the ZDF “Morning Magazine” is Weselsky was willing to compromise. “You do not ever threaten to strike, but this labor dispute might have to keep alive in the background,” he said. In the foreground stood “reasonable working conditions and pay.” The union boss demanded, among other relief in shifts and reduced overtime.

The German railway is currently in collective bargaining with the GDL and the Railway and Transport union (ECG). Both unions want to reach settlements that take into account all organized in their professions. So far, the GDL was only responsible for train drivers. Among its members but also include employees of the train crew. The train will prevent that ultimately different collective agreements apply for a professional group. Therefore they attempt to negotiate identical provisions in the current separate conversations.
