At the same time he resigned from an international committee to advise the government in their reform efforts. “I thought the government was resolute, but in fact it is not,” Stiglitz told Reuters. “It’s amazing how they have tried to obstruct us.”

The supposedly independent Commission with seven members was set up after last April the publication of millions of documents to managed from Panama letterbox and front companies had caused worldwide indignation. Besides Stieglitz also the Swiss anti-corruption expert Mark Pieth resigned from the Board.

According to Stiglitz’s view, the government had the committee initially promised full independence. Secondly, last week was informed the members that, unlike agreed their final report should not be published in any case. “We can only annhemen that the government has come under pressure from those who benefit from the current non-transparent financial system in Panama,” Stiglitz said.

Also Pieth, full time professor of criminal law at Basel, made serious allegations against the leadership in Panama. “We were asked to do them a favor. We were first shown to the media world, and then we are asked to keep quiet if they do not like something,” Pieth told Reuters.

Pieth said Next, the papers contained evidence of serious crimes such as money laundering profits from child prostitution. “I have looked at the so-called Panama papers exactly. I have to admit that even surprised me as experts on organized crime and economic crime, confirmed so much of what we often talk in theory, in practice, to see.”

Panamanian government did not respond to the allegations. In a message the government regretted only the resignations of Stiglitz and Pieth and led them to “internal differences” in the Commission back.
